EMDR WORKS Training and Developmental Pathway

EMDR Works training is highly interactive with a balance between theoretical, practical work and video material.

During training, practical work takes place in small groups (maximum 12) with the assistance of an experienced facilitator or trainer. Trainees will also practice the protocol by working on their own material (i.e. an old traumatic memory) both as a client and clinician.

bullet How EMDR was developed and the theoretical background
bullet The AIP model (Adaptive information processing)
bullet Comprehensive training in all eight phases of the protocol
bullet Taking a trauma history, assessing treatment contra-indications
bullet Case conceptualisation and the ‘Three layered approach’
bullet Strategies to stabilise patients/clients before embarking on treatment
bullet Dealing with abreactions during treatment as well as with blocked processing
bullet A basic understanding of dissociation
bullet Clinical practice as client and clinician
bullet Between Part 1 and 2 you will be expected to practice EMDR on at least one client

Part 2 Training: A deeper understanding of the protocol - working with a wider range of clients,                               unblocking stuck processing, identifying specific treatment problems. (2 days)

bullet The symptom based approach
bullet Blocked processing and the Cognitive Interweave

bullet EMDR and depression
bullet

The ‘Float forward’ or anticipatory anxiety strategy

bullet Practising advanced emotional containment and ‘benign dissociation’ strategies

bullet Applying the theory in your practice
bullet Examine and analyse your clinical use of EMDR
bullet Common mistakes
bullet Refresh your knowledge of the clinical applications of EMDR
bullet Learn through sharing experience of using EMDR
bullet Cultivate an accreditation-oriented approach to the practical application of EMDR
bullet

On completion you will be credited with a further 6 hours supervision towards accreditation (total 10 hours)

Accreditation as an EMDR Europe accredited practitioner:

On completion of all four parts of your EMDR Works training, you will be trained to a level which is recognised throughout the UK & Ireland and Europe and you will receive the EMDR Europe certificate of completion.

You will have completed 10 hours of the 20 Hours minimum that you need in order to become accredited. You will then be encouraged and supported to complete the final part of your accreditation as an EMDR UK and Ireland Association and EMDR Europe Accredited Practitioner.   Accreditation is voluntary, but highly recommended.

What is EMDR Europe?

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing represents one of the most important and innovative steps in the treatment of PTSD and psychological trauma in many years. EMDR Europe develops and delivers EMDR training courses which are extensively researched and fully endorsed by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE).

EMDR Europe promotes a form of psychotherapy training that is recognised and practiced the world over. EMDR courses take an extremely interactive approach to training; striking a balance between theoretical, practical and visual learning.

What do EMDR training courses involve?

EMDR courses are held in small groups (no more than twelve people) and are led by a friendly and experienced facilitator. The psychotherapy training is divided up into four stages in which trainees are required to draw on their own memories and deal with them from the perspective of both a client and a clinician.

The four sections of EMDR training courses are

Part One - Two days of basic theory and practice. This involves learning about the history and development of EMDR and establishing ways of conceptualising cases and strategies for dealing with varying types of client.

Part Two - Two days of looking at recognising symptoms, locating root memories and building templates for client defence mechanisms. The second phase of EMDR courses also involve role playing as both a client and clinician, and upon completion the trainee will be credited with two hours supervision to go towards their final accreditation.

Part Three - Two days of dealing with chronic trauma and dissociation. The group will discuss sexual and other forms of child abuse and their long-term effects, and learn how to help clients develop strategies to prevent oncoming anxiety.

Part Four - A one day refresher that is also worth six hours of supervision accreditation. Trainees will look at how to effectively apply the theory taught on EMDR courses to their practice and learn through sharing of experiences using EMDR amongst the group.

Who is eligible for EMDR training courses?

EMDR courses are limited to mental health professionals who are qualified and accredited in the core fields of psychiatry, psychology, mental health nursing and social work with mental health training.

It is also possible for places on EMDR courses to be allocated to occupational therapists, art therapists, GPs and applicants in the final year of study depending on their qualifications, accreditations and experience. To find out if you meet requirements please submit your CV to admin@emdrworks.com.
